AboitizLand, Inc. takes the lead in RAFI One to Tree’s Cebu-wide tree-growing initiative. Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) also actively took part in the project’s success. Their combined forces have driven significant change not only in the number of trees planted and grown, but in the lives of the individual farmers involved in the project as well.
The overall project was done in three phases aptly named AboitizLand 3, 4, and 5; signifying a continuation in the AboitizLand Projects 1 and 2 previously done with RAFI One to Tree. Each phase took two years to complete with AboitizLand 3 lasting from July 2017 to September 2019, AboitizLand 4 from July 2018 to May 2020, and AboitizLand 5 from July 2019 to September 2021.
The tree-growing project went to the far reaches of Western Cebu, but also covered certain areas in the south. This massive undertaking was able to cover the following areas within the project duration:
All the labour and hard work led to 143,000 seedlings planted. With this long list of project sites, the overall project was able to plant trees in a total of 174.4 hectares with 7.4 hectares maintained by PBSP. The rest are planted and maintained by RAFI One to Tree’s dedicated team of foresters and community partners.
The project has still a long way to go. One to Tree is largely dependent on the farmers for the survival of the seedlings. As of June 2020, it is safe to say that the partnership has met its objectives and continue to move forward.. The current COVID-19 pandemic might have dampened progress, but the future looks bright with more trees, given that the survival rate in almost all project phases claps at 90%.
With a total donation amount of ₱8,133,995.87, AboitizLand, Inc. has mobilized and capacitated many communities in Cebu. They took part in something that not only changed lives, but can potentially change the landscape of the province as well.
One to Tree, a program of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc., offers community-based and environmentally appropriate tree growing services.
